From the Marlin 336 wiki: The following table can be used to date the year of manufacture of a Marlin 336. It is also valid for determining most other Marlin firearm build dates from 1946 to the present. Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following table of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number: Date Prefix(s) 1946 C 1947 D. Strange serial number (Maybe) I recently acquired a Mdl 1894 S.44 Mag, 20' BBL in pristine condition. It has fine checkering on the stock as well as the forearm. The serial number is the strange part of this rifle it is 000272XX. When I tried to use the date of manufacture site I first tried '00' as the first two numbers. Marlin factory records (Regular factory letter fee) Lever action Marlin models with factory records: 1881 1889 1893 1895 1888 1892 1894 1897 All lever action models are found in one serial number range from 4096 to 355419 A small number of earlier serial numbers are available including: 286, 673, 1069, 1542, 1774, 1893, 1912, 2020, 2453, 2475.
Marlin manufactured pistols until 1875, when he began production of Ballard rifles. In 1881, he made his first lever-action repeating rifle for which his company became famous. In recent years, Marlin, along with its subsidiaries Harrington & Richardson/NEF, are now owned by Freedom Group Family of Companies. We also know now that the serial numbers ran above 450,000 ( I have Brophy's notes he kept on known serial numbers ). We also know that a serial number in the 442,000 range was shipped in the 'fall of 1913' per the 1915 Marlin catalog because the gun mentioned in the catalog is known.

None of the page scans are of original documents but are simply transcribed information typed into a word processing program. In general, this information is the same that you would get if you called our customer service department and asked them for the information. They use these documents as a reference and the documents should be limited to that use.

THE HISTORY OF WINCHESTER HISTORIC SERIAL NUMBER RECORDS.
There are many “legends” about why the historic serial number records for Winchester rifles and shotguns are not complete or why they are not always verifiable. A few reasons cited are:

Please keep the following points in mind as you explore these pages:
There are other outside resources – including the Cody Firearm Museum -- which can be excellent for determining date of manufacture and value: Click here to go to our gun values resource links.
